Solid Waste Management Challenges The Food Industry

Solid waste management, and the disposal of plastics in particular, is a growing concern to communities around the world. The typical amount of solid waste generation has nearly tripled in many industrial nations since 1960 while plastics generation in the municipal solid waste stream has increased from less than 1 percent in 1960 to over 11 percent in 2001.

As consumers generate higher amounts of waste, industry is developing new approaches to lessen the impact of solid waste on the environment. Technological advances enable manufacturers to enhance existing products with environmentally friendly features.

Preserving The Environment One Package At A Time

Introducing Zap® and UltraZap® EnviroPak, a range of new biodegradable products that are designed to improve the natural disposal of absorbent cellulose food pads.

Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent cellulose food pads feature a polyethylene backing that will degrade (as per ASTM D3826) and biodegrade (as per ASTM D5988) in most municipal solid waste systems. The degradation is triggered by heat and UV light and is enhanced by mechanical stress and moisture.

The enhanced polyethylene in Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent food pads complies with FDA (USA) and SCF (Europe) applicable food packaging regulations. When combined with our highly absorbent, FDA approved cellulose core, Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent food pads lock in moisture during the selling cycle and respond accordingly during the biodegradation process.

Zap and UltraZap EnviroPak absorbent cellulose food pads offer food marketers the advantages of trapping free-flowing natural juices in consumer-preferred packages while preserving the environment during the disposal process.

EnviroPak Natural Tissue

Paper Pak Industries is committed to a dynamic, earth-friendly approach to doing business. PPI's ongoing search for new ways to create sustainable products has produced an innovative way to better protect the environment.

EnviroPak Natural Tissue absorbent food pads offer several features and benefits to food processors, grocery retailers and consumers:

  • The natural tissue product is made from 100% secondary, pre-consumer fiber, therefore saving our precious forests, conserving natural resources, reducing and composting waste, cleaning process water, and emitting fewer greenhouse gases.
  • EnviroPak natural tissue absorbent food pads make a statement to your customers that you care about the environment.
  • EnviroPak natural tissue absorbent food pads are cost effective - the environmentally friendly product does not require an additional investment on your behalf.
  • The natural tissue is biodegradable, compostable and just as sanitary, safe, and absorbent as bleached white tissue.
  • EnviroPak natural tissue absorbent food pads are made using a chlorine/bleach-free process, which is less harmful to the environment. In addition, less energy is required to produce natural tissue thus minimizing the product's carbon footprint.
  • The natural tissue is manufactured using a 380° dryer that effectively kills any potential bacteria. The natural tissue is approved by the USDA and FDA for food contact.
